CUSTOM SIZED DUCKS
« on: July 29, 2008, 01:49:14 PM »

Now that I have my own printing gear, I am capable of producing plans on demand and I can produce plans in any* size you wish.

* Any size plans can be printed from the original drawings, but they may require modifications to address issues like structure, weight, and former dimensions.

I can easily adjust the dimensions (length/width) of materials in the building manual to compensate for the custome sized plans.  If, for example, you wanted a 200% scale Mud Duck MkII, I can blow up the plans and adjust the dimensions printed in the build manual, but the wing will need to be built differently to accomodate the extra load as well as other factors.

I will eventually offer "corrected" versions of our designs in different scales that will be able to be built exactly from the plan/manual without any designing on the customers part.  But until then, if you would like to take on a Duck of a different size, any size, let me know and I can give you an estimate to the cost and provide suggestions as to what, if any, changes should be made or considered.

I think this is more practical to electric builders looking to build something to fit thier power set-up instead of the other way around.  Many modelers now have motors and controllers laying around and may be looking for the right model for this set-up, you can order the plans to the size that matches your gear now!

We are currently working on smaller Ducks to offer the electric community with new materials options and adjusted construction methods and possibly even kits.

Has there been any more on mini sport duck plans or kit?  Maybe about 40 inch span?  Or even a micro Sport Duck.  For electric indoor addictions.

Hi Tom,

Indoor and mini versions are all on the drawing board... literally and figuratively.  I have every intention to get a whole range of Ducks available, in plan form at least, to accommodate every modelers preferences, but progress varies.

Currently I have been focusing on getting the kits back on line for the Mud Duck Sport and semi-kits for the Mud Duck MkII and Agri-Duck(which, by the way, should be available in the next 2 months).

I had anticipated having at least one indoor plane design about ready by now but it is still in the works.  if you would like a 40" version of a Mud Duck or Agri-Duck and feel comfortable scaling down some aspects yourself (e.g. making a one piece wing instead of the functional strut version of the full size models),  I would be happy to scale down a set of plans to your preferred size.  i of course would be happy to assist you in providing guidance on how to address scaling down the necessary areas, I just do not have it currently drawn or written out for you to follow verbatim.

I promise, I will get some available as soon as I can.

Hey Greg,
I have a couple of 32CC weed wacker motors that are converted to RC use. What size Duck Can I use one of these on? Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,

Actually either of the big'uns will be a good fit, you could even go a little larger if you wished.  The Mud Duck MkII (108") would fly nicely on it and the weight is welcome on that nose, same goes for the Agri-Duck (110").  The biggest I think you may be able to go with a 32cc conversion would be about 120%  (130" for the MkII or 132" for the Agri-Duck) but that would limit your aerobatics (which is really only wing-overs and big loops).  I would stick to around 120" if you wanted to pull off a loop with a 32cc ryobi.

Here are pictures of Doug Russell's regular (110") Agri-Duck with one on it:

Greg if you drop below 50 inch span for electric it might be worth trying/specifying 3mm foam board or just strip the paper from the inside by damping it??

This is an option.  I will have to do some R&D and try some different methods to see what works, what doesn't, what is simpler, what is a hassle, etc.  I would opt for FFF for electric versions of any of the ducks between 30"-82" if the finish of the exterior is not of the utmost importance.

Another option is Depron (or other variations of it by other trade names) for wingspans under 40"-45" (I would need to do some stress tests to see the maximum wingspan that can be handled by Depron, but ~40" sounds feasible).
