Mud Duck Sport in progress
« on: January 15, 2010, 11:57:52 PM »

Well, I finally started to actually build my Mud Duck Sport.  I only cut out most of the parts about 2 years ago (im pacing myself haha).  Anywho, I wanted to build her as an electric but as money is tight and I have a Glow engine lying around from my old Trainer, I decided to transplant my gear from my crashed Superstar .40 to my Mud Duck Sport.  I started a build thread at RCGroups.

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1176247

I also plan on getting the builders assortment from here at MDA.

But I do have one question so far.  The wing mounts for on the wing and the fuselage.  Are they simple balsa, or should they be built from hardwood or lite ply?

 Matthew,

I'm glad you're back to finishing the Sport.  You can always convert it to electric in the future when you either have the funds for an electric set up or salvage one from another plane.  I converted the "Warbird" Duck from OS .91 4-stroke power to electric.

The wing mounts most definitely need to be light ply.  We supply 1/8" light-ply mounts with the kits, some people have upgraded them to thicker versions, but 1/8" is the minimum.

Thanks Greg.  I had a feeling Lite ply was what I was going to need.  I'm going to have to check to see how much I have lying around.

No problem.  I responded to your RCGroups thread as well in case others there were waiting for an answer.  I also posted the two pages of the aileron suppliment there as well.

Slowly here and there I've been fighting work and sheer laziness to get my Duck built.  I have updated the build thread at RCGroups for the build.  I have the wings mostly completed with only a few little details to finish here and there.  I only need to mount the hinges for the wing struts.

The fuselage is also getting there too.  The forward half that is lol.  I just glued in the front former that will start to make the "chin" or "beak" lol.  The wing mounts are in but have yet to be glued.

So far all that needs to be started is the tail, landing gear, and the wing struts.  I plan on painting this one bright yellow being my first Mud Duck.

Alot more has been done on the MDS.  I have the tail section complete, with the verticle and horizontal stabs built.  Just need to make the rudder and elevator, and landing gear.  I plan on starting the landing gear hopefully this weekend.  But I've run into a snag.  And a pretty big one at that.  I was planning on using a Thunder Tiger .40 from my Hobbico Superstar .40 for power.  I checked my engine today to hopefully make the outlines for the engine mount.  Needless to say the control horn on the engine moves, but the carb doesn't.  It stays closed.  Now I did check the forward compartment that would hold the fuel tank to see how well it will accommodate a Lipo pack for electric power.  LOTS of room lol.  It will be a lesser investment buying a motor and ESC combo from BPHobbies than it will to replace the TT .40.  I hope I don't hve to do that, but it may come to that.  On top of that I need to buy 2 motors and ESCs for a Kyosho Cessna 172, and for my Dad's first new Mud Duck.  Inpired by the ideas of Greg here at MDA, and Parrot Pilot at RCGroups.

He's building a Mono Duck.  Loosely based off of the Velie Monocoupe, it's being built like an Mud Duck Sport.  Trying to stay as true to the original Mud Duck design as humanly possible,  Rugged yet simple construction.  He's also designed a Mud Duck derived Fokker Eindecker he calls the Einducker.  Its next on his build list.

I also have 3 designs of my own I plan on tinkering with.  Using the MDS plans, plan on doing a model based on the Wagner Twin Cub.  I call it the Twin Duck.  Also using the Agri-Duck Sport plans I plan on building a P-51D based Duck I call the Duckstang.  As well as a plane based off of the Fly Baby homebuilt aircraft.  I call it the Baby Duck.....I'm still trying to think of a better name though lol.
