My first Crickit Scratchbuild
« on: October 23, 2009, 10:27:19 AM »

Well everyone it was inevitable. With the success of my "Diddle" Mud Duck, I decided to do a scratchbuild of my Crickit kit. I used my kit parts as templates so I can make several Crickits (if its as hyperactive as they say it is its not a bad idea lol). I've been building it for the majority of the evening, and I think I have it about half done. Built from FFF (even the tail components), I have to due to the amount of materials I have lying around the house. I can't really get over just how small it is. I'm not quite sure on what motor I can use, it just depends on how heavy the airframe turns out to be.

I have some pics posted at my build thread at RCGroups:

Update:

I have 3 possible motors I can use at the moment,  I have my Eflite Park400 motor, BP A2212-13 (on 3s lipo), and an Align 430l motor/esc combo.  I have a Thunderbird 18 ESC not being used at the moment for the other 2 motors.  It just depends on the weight of the model as to which one I use.

With some research on the web, I have decided to use my Align 430L motor and 35amp ESC (atleast I think its 35amps).  It is roughly equivalent to a .20 size glow engine.  Shouldn't be quite as wicked and the .25 sized glow engine.  But it should be close to the flying capability that the Crickit is known for.

I'm figuring on this setup:

Align 430L
Align 35amp ESC
Parkzone 5 channel receiver (from Typhoon 3D)
9 gram Power HD servos
Parkzone 3s lipo from T-28B, Corsair

Well, I haven't been adding information about my build here at MDA.  But I have been giving updates to my build at RCGroups.  Long story short I have flown her twice on a 400 size outrunner.  Both have ended in crashes.  First problem was with a goof in the dihedral of the wing.  One wingtip was actually higher than the other.  Not by much but just enough to make it bank to the left.  I fixed that solution, not to mention the repairs to my landing gear which broke in 2 places.  I took all the dihedral out of the wing and added ailerons.  Here comes pilot error.  I took it out to fly yesterday and didn't check to make sure the ailerons were moving properly.  It turns out they are reversed.  That and a hefty crosswind just as she left the ground.  I have the video posted to Youtube:

It turns out the ZX10 Radio and receiver won't let the ailerons reverse with the switches on the radio.  I'm in the middle of repairs to the airframe which are almost done.  My T-28 Trojan is currently down for repairs after it crashed a week ago.  Besides wing repairs and such its getting repainted.  So it won't be flying anytime soon.  Probably not till spring.  It's got a Spektrum AR500 in it and it may be transplanted to the Crickit temporaily.  Or I may build a new dihedral wing and keep the ZX10 radio in it.  I haven't decided yet.  Check my RCGroups build thread for details.
