Micro Sized Diddle Duck
« on: October 18, 2009, 06:35:46 AM »

I just designed and maidened my "Diddle Duck".  It has a 30" wingspan an 7oz RTF.  Flew like a dream.  It was maidened at the KIEF 2009 Indoor flyin at the GSC sports dome in Muncy, PA.  I call it a Diddle Duck because building a Stevens Aero Diddle Bug inspired me to build it.  I liked being a small parkflyer (technically not micro, but it is smaller than any duck designed to date),  very easy to transport, and without the bottom (ala Diddle Bug) made accessing the electronics and battery a breeze!  I had taken my brushless Cox micro P-40, Storm Launcher, and a Gene Bond Designed Blucub made to look like a Taylor F-2 Cub.  But my Mud Duck quickly became my favorite of all the planes I took to KIEF 2009.

Heres the build thread at RCGroups:

I checked the weather and tomorrow seems to be half decent weather wise.  I'm going to try and get some video of it tomorrow.  I may even attach my Flycamone2 to the top of the wing!

Matthew,

I'm glad to hear it flew so well and you had a good time at KIEF 2009.

Yeah, the landing gear broke off, I have to design a new setup for the next version.  I'm just going to handlaunch it from here on out.  I'm not sure it really needs an elevator as when I throttle up it wants to climb like theres no tomorrow.  I probably don't have anywhere near enough down thrust built into it.  But its a happy flyer.  I reduced the throws to 70% for low rates and added 45% expo on the rudder and elevator.

How far have you gotten with your micro Mud Duck design?

Since, during the Summers, my home club's meetings are held at an alternate location without a gym to fly in afterward, the indoor Duck's fell off my radar.  I also got very busy and didn't have the time anyway.  I really want to get a few together this year though.

On a similar note, We have been playing with the CricKit as an electric and built a FFF prototype and it flys awesome!  It even rolls and can do turns around it's own wingtip and still fly as slow and gentle as it's big brothers.  I will probably be releasing it as a Depron kit (hopefully before Christmas, but more likely after).  I will build a couple Depron prototypes before going into mass production.  I think they will be flyable indoors as well, that is why I am putting that at the top of my list to get together, so I can test indoors.  A Giant-Scale indoor plane  (33" can be considered giant scale for indoors, don't you think?)

I should think so.  My Diddle Mud Duck came out to be at about 30" wingspan.  It was a bit of a handful flying indoors on high rates.  With all the expo and low rates settings I put into it, it could still use more.  I started building a Crickit out of FFF last night (inspired by my success with my Diddle Duck), I used the kit you gave me for templates.  I figured they should come in handy if I total it.  I don't want to loose my prized Crickit lol.  I'm planning on buying a set of Agri-Duck Sport plans for scaling down for parkflyers.  As much as I want one of the bigger Ducks, I just don't have room at the moment for them lol.
