Foam Board suppliers
« on: March 07, 2008, 03:56:48 PM »

I bought a set of Mud Duck Plans many years ago when it was reveiwed in Model Aviation (I think).  Having built a LT-40 to train on, I now want to build the Mud Duck (I love LARGE airplanes).  I am trying to find foam board locally (I live in East Central Iowa).  Not having much luck.  I am told Office Depot has this material, but I haven't located a store near by yet.  I also see there are sources on the internet, but I try not to use them unless I absolutely have too.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.  Thanks, Ron.
PS. Is the 40" x 60" x 3/16" the size I should look for?

I copied this post in another forum and pasted here for people looking in this forum.

Thanks for purchasing the plans, glad to see you are finally getting to build one.  The 40" x 60" x 3/16" is the size most commonly available that meets the minimum requirements to cut out the wing panels in one piece.

Office Depot may have it in this size but it is more likely to carry smaller sizes, although others have found it there.  It seems to depend on local demand whether they stock the larger sizes.

A sure-fire supplier close to you is find your local sign shop (check your yellow pages).  nearly all sin shops use this in these size sheets (or larger, which they will cut down for you if you can't fit 4'x8' in your car)to back signs, etc..  Anyway, they may not have it sitting in the showroom for sale as it is consumed by them and you will have to ask for 3 sheets (@ 40x60) and they will charge you far less than it will cost you to purchase on the internet.  In fact you will have to probably buy at least 25 sheets and pay more for shipping than for the actual product if you order from the internet.

Another source a modeler over in New Zealand found was a picture framing shop, since he was having trouble locating it elsewhere.

Hope this helps!

I stumbled across a great deal on foamboard. Hobby Lobby offers an internet coupon for 40% off any one item. You can download as many coupons as you want. you are allowed to use one per day. I went to their framing department and asked for 3 sheets of 40"x 60". The girl wrote the ticket for $27.00 which wasn't a bad price, I got to the checkout and they took 40% off the whole sale instead of just the one item, $17.00 for enough foam board to built the Agri Duck!! My advice..look for the youngest person at the checkout or make 3 trips. Here is the link:

Great Find!!!  This should be great for a lot of modelers out there! Too bad I would have to drive to NY to find my nearest location!  THe funny thing is when I began reading your post, I was like "When did Hobby Lobby start carrying foamboard???"  of course thinking of the "R/C" Hobby Lobby  Grin

So, I suppose you are now building a Foamboard version AND a Corroplast version...?  With all your SPAD experience, I can't see you resisting the urge to have a plastic version. Wink

My friend John thought we should do a quick build with the foam to see how the coro version compares. I also thought that I would use the foam board for my templates for the coro. We had a club fly at the Golf Dome last night and I was showing everyone the plans. I think if the duck flys well there will be a lot more ducks in Chicago. Hopefully I can get these guys to order their own plans. Currently I am building about 10 eagles and 4 vultures for club members out of foam so I backed down from building everyone Ducks and pointed them to your site.
